It’s time to introduce you to another one of our fantastic clients! Cockerton Fisheries is one of the most popular fish and chip shops in Darlington – but who are the team behind the success? We caught up with Samantha, the owner of the shop, to learn more about how she got into the industry and the growth of her business.
Samantha started working for the previous owners of the shop doing part-time hours when she was 15, and a few years later she went to university to study business. During that time, her dad bought Cockerton Fisheries. He ran it for 25 years until he retired seven years ago, and then he passed the business down to Samantha.
We asked Samantha about the rest of her team in the shop, and she said:
“The team are fantastic – some staff members have been at the company for over 10 years and a few of them have been there since I first started! There are four full-time staff members, one part-time worker and three people who work around their school hours. We also have two staff members primarily responsible for preparing the potatoes daily.
“And me of course! I work 50-60 hours a week – it’s hard, but enjoyable. It’s very rewarding when we receive excellent feedback, and I love seeing the shop busy. We sell hundreds of portions of fish and chips a week, and we have many regulars. There are also some large companies who order from us every single Friday.”
The team always strive to go above and beyond for their valued customers. For example, during the Covid-19 pandemic, they set up a new delivery service for those in isolation and the elderly, and have continued to deliver to around 20 elderly people per week who have a standing order set up.
We have worked with the team at Cockerton Fisheries for around 35 years. Our Frozen at Sea 8-16oz cod is perfect for their medium and large fish and chip meals, and the 5-8oz fillets are used for their smaller portions.
We asked Samantha why she chooses to purchase products from us:
“Collins Seafoods is one of the reasons why we have a reputation for excellent quality fish and receive fantastic feedback from our customers. As well as this, the team at Collins provide an efficient service – we rarely have problems, but if there are any issues, they are quickly resolved. The sales staff and drivers are always helpful and delivery schedules are very flexible.”
Cockerton Fisheries’ success continues to grow, with local MP Peter Gibson recently naming it the best fish and chip shop in Darlington based on the results of a Facebook poll. We’d certainly recommend giving the shop a try to find out why it won the coveted title!
