As part of our new Meet The Fleet blog series, we would like to introduce you to one of our newest vessels.

The Geir, built in 2020 and owned by the Holmeset family, is 63 metres long, which is about two-thirds the height of Big Ben. It has a total loading capacity of 500 metric tons and a gross tonnage of 2,508. The ship voyages 11 to 12 times a year, spending roughly 350 days out of a possible 365 at sea.

Sailing under the flag of Norway, it mainly lands in the ports of Kirkens, Tromsø and Ålesund, after fishing in the Barents Sea, the North Sea and sometimes the Greenland waters. It brings back several species such as cod, haddock, Greenland halibut, white halibut, tusk, ling, redfish and catfish.

This modern factory long liner was built to run with a minimal carbon footprint – the filleting and processing technology onboard, which can adapt to each supplier’s specifications, is unlike any other frozen-at-sea fishing vessel. The crew have the option to switch between battery power, diesel electric or diesel mechanic modes, and the vessel hauls the fish through a moonpool which is a secure hauling area located within the ship. This helps to reduce fish loss from each trawl, minimising waste.

The team at Norwegian Seafood Company focus on consistently developing their product quality, but also improving the safety and leisure facilities for the crew members to ensure they enjoy their job on the vessel; like the Kirkella, the Geir has a cinema, gym and sauna on board for the team to unwind after their shift.

There are between 16 and 18 people in each of the two crews; the below picture shows Karl E Dalberg who has been working at sea since 2011.

At Collins Seafoods, we have had the pleasure of working alongside Norwegian Seafood Company, Ørjan Dahl and the Holmeset family for many years. There are currently four generations working together onboard, and we get along well with the team.
