We would like to introduce you to another one of our vessels, the Santa Princesa, as part of our Meet The Fleet blog series.
Built in 1987, this fantastic frozen-at-sea fishing trawler is registered in Portugal, but usually lands in Germany or Norway. The name “Santa Princesa” means Holy Princess, which was chosen based on a tradition in Portugal to name vessels after saints, because around 84% of the country’s population are baptized Catholics. Some other examples of this are: Santa Isabel, Santa Joana, Praia de Santa Cruz, and Santa Mafalda.
Santa Princesa is 65.5m long and 13.01m wide. Its carrying capacity is 1100 t DWT (deadweight tonnage), and the on-board cold store measures around 1000 m3. The vessel mostly catches cod, and when it’s fully loaded, the cold store can hold 650-670 tonnes of cod filets.
It takes around three trips a year to the Barents Sea, fishing in the Norwegian and Svalbard waters. The loyal crew of 32 people can unwind in the cinema, gym and sauna after their shifts, and we caught up with Captain Carlos Mendonça to find out what it’s like working on board.
“The Santa Princesa is the most beautiful vessel. The job is hard, but I enjoy it because I like a challenge.”
