In April, the founder of Collins Seafoods, Richard Collins, retired after starting the business in 1980 and leading as managing director for 42 successful years. At the start of his journey, he delivered products to pubs, homes and restaurants in his own van, and the business rapidly developed from there. Over the years, Richard expanded from local deliveries in the North East to covering Northumberland, North Yorkshire, and Cumbria. And it wasn’t long before he was delivering nationally and internationally!

In 2011, Richard agreed a deal to buy the company Wraggs Seafoods in Leeds; this allowed Richard to supply the whole of the North of England with his top quality Frozen at Sea products. In 2021, Wraggs Seafoods was renamed Collins Seafoods Yorkshire, merging the companies into one recognisable brand, and in the same year, Richard opened Collins Seafoods Ireland to aid in the supply of products abroad.

Proud of how the business has continually progressed over the years, and the fantastic things he has achieved as an entrepreneur, Richard remains close to his former colleagues and is no stranger to the office.

Richard worked well with his colleague Craig English, who has been with the company for just over 23 years. Starting out as a sales administrator, Craig worked his way up and was promoted in 2000 when he became the sales and general manager. Once it was announced he was retiring, Richard had no doubts he was leaving the business in good hands when he then promoted Craig to managing director. We asked Craig how he feels after his promotion with the company:

Proud, but with big shoes to fill. I am looking forward to continuing the growth and success the company has enjoyed under Richard’s stewardship.

Craig was born in Burnley, Lancashire in 1970, and his mother told him that he was the first baby born in that decade in Burnley General Hospital. Before his journey started at Collins, Craig’s first job was on a Youth Training Scheme. I got the job in 1986 and I earned £27.50 per week. I thought I was rich!

Craig’s favourite thing about working at Collins Seafoods is that every day is different and never dull. In his spare time, his hobbies and interests include music, football, boxing, and golf. His favourite films are Goodfellas and Trainspotting – great choices!

When Craig gets a chance to visit the fish and chip shop himself, his go-to order is the classic combination of fish, chips and mushy peas, but does he order scraps or no scraps?

It’s batter! And yes.

The Collins team are enjoying working under Craig’s direction, and those who have worked with him for over 20 years are looking forward to the journey ahead for the company. Craig added, Every member of staff who worked with Richard over the years played their part in the company’s success, and we are all determined to ensure that we continue as the country’s leading supplier of Frozen at Sea fish.
