“We want future generations to be able to enjoy seafood and oceans full of life, forever.” – The Marine Stewardship Council.

The Marine Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organisation that recognises those fisheries that meet its high standards of sustainability. Its mission is to use its ecolabel and fishery certification programmes to identify fisheries that use sustainable fishing practices and reduce environmental impacts.

Products that are MSC-certified mean the fisheries are helping to safeguard species in the ocean and protect their habitats while maintaining a constant supply of seafood. Another benefit of certified products is that they are fully traceable and according to recent studies, it is becoming more important for consumers to be aware of the source of the products they are eating.

Products that have been certified to the MSC Fisheries Standard, a scientific measure of sustainable fishing, will have a blue ecolabel. Companies that work with MSC are constantly changing working practices to comply with relevant laws and environmental standards to continue qualifying for the ecolabel and improving their sustainability. Retailers such as Tesco have also recently been stocking an increasing number of MSC-certified products, due to research showing that it’s becoming more important to people to live sustainably.

At Collins, we are pleased to be MSC-certified and believe all products should be fully traceable for our customers. By working with the organisation, we are consistently finding new ways to improve sustainability in our working practices, while also ensuring there will be a steady ongoing supply of seafood so that future generations can enjoy the nutritious benefits of fish.
